Mapping Party at NIT Calicut

Tathva 09

The Mapping Party at NIT Calicut during 23-24 October was conducted by GeoHackers and fsug-calicut in collaboration with the Tathva team. This was the first Mapping Party in Kerala. The event was awesome and fun. We had many of young cartographers from in and around Kerala to participate in this venture.

The event began with a introductory to talk on OSM by Sajjad and Praveen, with a beautiful concept talk by Jemshid. We were privileged to collect few GPS devices for the event. Arky was taking care of the registration, contribution and such things. The entire audience were divided into 4-5 different teams, led by Praveen, Jemshid, Arky, Jaisen and Junise. Each team has been deployed to a particular region in the 250 acre wide NITC campus. The mappers ran around the campus with the GPS devices, taking traces, waypoints. Later coming back to tag them and try uploading. All of the mappers created accounts in openstreetmap.org and the editing and tagging was done using the heavy duty OSM editor called JOSM. Tagging seemed to be more fun for the mappers as it gave them more inspiration to collect more details.

The event was really like a hackshop, with lot of fun, came to an end with the "Chathamangalam Declaration". More details and review of the event is available at the wiki.
